Large Platter

This large platter is inscribed with the words, ‘and to make an end is to make a beginning, the end is where we start from’ by T.S. Eliot. This was inscribed by the calligrapher, Michael Edwards, who I often collaborate with. It is hand thrown in red earthenware clay and decorated with white slip. The lettering and design use the sgraffito technique, cutting back to the clay coloured underneath.

The three hares motif has an interesting history and is found on roof bosses in Devon churches, the motif is also found in India and China and seems to have travelled along the silk road to Europe. It was adopted by the Devon tin miners and became known as the ‘tinners’ rabbits’.

The words will resonate with many whose lives have undergone changes in these challenging times and are looking ahead to new beginnings.
